Michael Douglas McDaniel, 67, of Dix, passed away 7:22 p.m. Saturday, August 17, 2019, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 10, 1951, in Centralia, the son of Otho D. McDaniel and Mary L. (Sisson) Robbins. On September 1, 2018, at City Hope Church in Centralia, he married Myrt Porter, and she survives in Dix. He worked as a Millwright at Rockwell for 19 years, and then worked in shipping and receiving at Southwire for ten years. After retirement, he was employed by the Jefferson County Sherriff's Office, doing maintenance and janitorial work. He attended Centralia High School and two years at Kaskaskia College. He served in the United States Army, in Vietnam, as a Gunner and Mechanic, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and the merit of Wings. He was a collector of vintage toys and money, loved riding his tractor, and loved spending time in his garage with friends and family. In addition to his wife, Myrt McDaniel of Dix, he is survived by five children, Melissa McDaniel of Centralia, Clinton McDaniel of Centralia, Christy and Travis Kelley of Mt. Vernon, Stacey and Luke Marcum, and Bobbie and Ryan Lane of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren, Brooklynn Kelley of Mt. Vernon, Dylan Timmons of Centralia, Travis Kelley of Mt. Vernon, Rylie Timmons of Centralia, Dannie Lane of Mt. Vernon, and William Lane of Mt. Vernon; three brothers, Gary McDaniel of Dix, Chuck McDaniel of Centralia, and Steve McDaniel and wife Vickie of Richview; two sisters, Donna Wesling of Centralia and friend Don Berry, and Susie Smith and husband Gene of Centralia; several nieces and nephews; and many great friends, especially Joe Hardy of Centralia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Otho McDaniel and Mary Robbins; one brother, Bob McDaniel; and one nephew, Rod Wesling. In accordance with Mr. McDaniel's wishes, a private family ceremony will be held, and cremation rites will be accorded, following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Hope House in St. Louis, and will be accepted by mail to the Osborn Funeral Home, P.O. Box 130, Dix, Illinois 62830.
